The Singapore Business Council networking on 15th May was a cosy affair at Level 43 at the Four Points Sheraton on Sheikh Zayed Road. Attendees included Hamdan Mohamed, President of the Arab Business Club, young entrepreneur Mansoor Mana Al Otaiba, Surya Subramanian, Group CFO of Emirates NBD, and our friends from the Jordanian Business Council. SBC Networking Event on 24th April 2012

Barasti was a hive of activity on 24th April as members of the Singaporean and Spanish communities mingled. What was interesting was that the majority of the Singaporeans arrived promptly at 8pm and left by 9ish, while most our Spanish friends arrived after 9pm and stayed much later. Whether culture had anything to do with it, or whether it was because of the late start of the Barcelona match that night, we do not know. What we are sure about is that when the two crowds did overlap, some excellent business networking took place. Included in the approximately 100 attendees were a few members from the French Business Council and the Jordanian Business Council. It seems this experiment- of holding the Singapore Business Council event with another Business Council – has proven successful. We will continue with this concept with other Business Councils in order to provide our members with enhanced networking opportunities. We look forward to your continued support.

Chinese New Year Party on 3rd February 2012

More than 110 people came to usher in Chinese New Year and the year of the Dragon in true Singapore fashion. The Singapore Business Council, together with the Singapore Women’s Group, organized this fun evening at the Singapore Consulate on 3rd February 2012. One of the highlights was the tossing of the lo hei. It is said that the higher you toss the lo hei, the more prosperous you will be in the year. Going by what we saw, it looks like it will be a wonderful year for all attendees. Also among the highlights, the games for the children, the table games, and the lucky draw. Thank you to Singapore Consul-General Mr. Umej Bhatia for gracing the occasion and all attendees for your presence.

New Year Cocktail Reception on 8th January 2012

It was an enjoyable evening in the garden of the Consulate as the Singapore Business Council ushered in the New Year with a cocktail reception. The crowd consisted of many regulars and some new faces. Bankers, lawyers, traders, businessmen and others. We were delighted to have the President of the Arab Business Club and our friends from the Pakistan Business Council present as well. A big thank you to everybody who turned up. We hope you enjoyed the company. Also special thanks to Singapore Deli for giving us a good deal on the food, and to Jaguar Energy Drink for sponsoring the drinks. And finally, thank you to the Singapore Consulate for letting us use their premises. Now that the New Year celebration is over, we look forward to inviting you to the Chinese New Year party in early February. Watch this space for details.

SBC Networking Event on 4th December 2011

It was another successful evening of networking at the SBC event held on 4th December, 7.30pm at the Four Points by Sheraton. We had more than 50 guests comprising mostly senior professionals and entrepreneurs. Thank you to Societe Generale who offered a talk on investment strategy and trust services. Philippe Boutron, Regional Chief Investment Officer of Societe Generale Private Banking in Dubai, gave his views on the investment outlook, gold prices and the Europe and US economies. We also heard from Roderick Ho, Director of Linden Group, and Derek Too of Societe Generale, who talked about life planning and trust services respectively. The talk was followed by drinks and snacks at the level 43 bar, where guests enjoyed a stunning 360 degree view of Dubai. The last members left at midnight, bringing to a close yet another successful event by the Singapore Business Council. We look forward to welcoming you back at these events, and endeavour to continue making them work for you.

Farewell Felix! The Singapore Business Council held this event to bid goodbye to its outgoing President Felix Sim as he embarks on his new venture in Singapore, Playlor (www.playlor.com). Felix has served the business council with distinction and will be missed. He is known for bringing fresh ideas and energy into the Council. Honoring Felix’s contributions, the new Singapore Consul-General, Umej Bhatia, gave a sterling farewell speech for Felix and also welcomed the new President of the Council, Nadir Zafar, who was previously the Director-Events in the EXCO. Refreshments for the event was sponsored by Mr Prata (www.mrprata.com) who gave us a taste of Singapore-style roti prata and Milo Dinosaur.

Dinner with DIFC Chief Justice, Michael Hwang

The Singapore Business Council held an exclusive dinner with DIFC Chief Justice, Michael Hwang on 12th October 2011 at Singapore restaurant Peppercrab, Grand Hyatt. Michael is a globally-renown lawyer who has been named in “The Best of the Best 2011″ as one of the top 39 commercial arbitration practitioners in the world and in Global Arbitration Review (2006) as Asia’s top arbitrator. Among his current appointments, Michael is Singapore’s non-Resident Ambassador to Switzerland, a member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sports, Trustee of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre and Advisory Board member of the Singapore Management University Faculty of Law. http://www.mhwang.com/

New SBC President

Mr. Nadir Ali Zafar has been appointed as President of the Singapore Business Council following Mr. Felix Sim’s move back to Singapore. Nadir was elected unaminously by the Executive Committee members and begins his term effective October 2011. Nadir has been active in the SBC EXCO since May 2010 when he was Director-Events. Commenting on the appointment in a letter to the new President, H.E. Hamad Buamim, Director General of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry noted “We are confident that you will excel as a representative of the Singapore Business Community and look forward to working towards deepening and reinforcing relations. We look forward to the prospect of working with you in the interest of those objectives which join our countries in responsibility as well as friendship”.

Mr. Dilip Daryani and Ms. Elfarina Zaid were nominated into the Singapore Business Council Executive Committee as Director, Business Development and Director, Strategic Development respectively. The move was confirmed at the Annual General Meeting on 25th May 2011.
